Since its establishment in 1997, PES Section has been providing a platform to speakers from industry and academic institutions to give presentations on power engineering, industrial drives, energy management, engineering quality, building services and many other technical topics.
The Section also organizes technical visits to engineering sites such as power plants, substations, control centers, rolling stocks and building electrical systems. These visits also cover sites outside Hong Kong . The past visit was the Two-Days Technical Visit and Cross-Border Meeting with various learned societies in Guangzhou held in previous years.
To strengthen the link with other professional organizations, a joint symposium with the Macau Institution of Engineers was held on 30th September 2005 with a theme of Advanced Building Energy Technologies for Sustainable City Development Efficiency and Renewability.
Special events for members, focusing on particular subjects, are also organized to promote expertise and awareness in the subject that is of interest to the power and energy engineering/technology community in Hong Kong.
The Power Symposium of The PES, which is a one day symposium focusing on the technical aspects related to the respective areas of the three Professional Groups, is now an annual event chaired by the chairmen of the three Professional Groups in rotation. The one to be held in 2012 will be the 11th Power Symposium with a theme on building services aspects.
The flagship event of the SSP is the International Conference on Advances in Power System Control, Operation and Management (APSCOM) which is a triannual Conference starting from 1991 and has become an internationally known event to the professionals worldwide. The last one was the 8th Conference held on 8th to 11th November 2009 in Kowloon Shangra-La Hotel. The 9th Conference will be held on 11th to 14th November 2012 in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The PES also maintains a close relationship and affiliation with the Professional Networks (PN) of the IET in order to enhance both networking and quality standards of activities and services to members. There are four PNs which PES is linked with :
- Building Electrical Technology
- Power Trading and Control
- Power Systems and Equipment
- Power Conversion and Application
In October 2004, the PES hosted for the Building Electrical Technology Network (BETNET) the first International Conference on Building Electrical Technology - BETNET 2004 in Hong Kong, which was the first international conference organized for PN in IET at the time and were supported by PN management of the IET and well received by members and professionals in the related fields.
APPEAL TO PARTICIPATION
While the PES Committee strikes hard to organize activities for the IET members in power and energy engineering related areas, it appeals to members for active support in participation in all activities including contribution to committee works.
When there are vacancies of the Ordinary Member in The PES for the next session, invitation of submitting Nomination Form will be posted on the IEE Hong Kong Newsletter and the website of The PES at http://www.iee.org.hk in the month of June each year. All IET members in Hong Kong in the power and energy fields are most welcomed to join in the Committee to contribute their efforts and expertise to advance the operation of The PES and to serve the IET members.
