Message from the Chairman, Power and Energy Section

The Institution of Engineering and Technology Hong Kong

Welcome to the website of the Power and Energy Section (PES) of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (The IET) Hong Kong Branch.

PES committee consists of members from a wide range of professions including academics, industrialists, Government officials and utilities services providers so as to represent various interests and to build strong linkages among related sectors. In order to provide quality services to IET members and in keeping with technological developments, three professional groups were established under PES, namely, Energy, Power Systems and Building Services. In the 2008/09 Session, PES has organized various seminars, site visits, workshops and symposiums which were well-received by IET members. This could not have been accomplished without the continuous effort, commitment and dedication of the section committee members.

Engineering and technology is fundamental to the sustainable development and advancement of a Hong Kong. In the coming years, it is foreseeable that a large number of major engineering projects will be launched. Power and energy are dispensable components of these projects. Moreover, with the globally recognized imminence of the climate change issue, the employment of new technologies in power and energy conversion and utilization for new developments as well as existing installations will be essential to achieve a sustainable low carbon future. In this regard, the PES 2009/2010 session committee will continue to arrange technical seminars, workshops, site visits and symposiums/conferences for IET members to keep abreast of the latest engineering and technology development in power and energy. These activities will also serve as platforms for members to share professional experience and knowledge, and to network with each other. Meanwhile, PES will keep contributing its technical know-how to the society through actively participating in various relevant government consultations and the formulation of industry standards and code of practices.

It is my great pleasure to be the Chairman of PES of Session 2009/2010. I trust that with the strong commitment and devoted efforts of the section committee, we will continue to deliver high quality services to our members. Our success will hinge on your engagement. We look forward to your active support and participation in our coming activities.

Ho, Siu Kwong

Chairman

Power and Energy Section Committee

INTRODUCTION

The Power and Energy Section (PES) aims to provide opportunities for members to share experience and exchange views in the fields of power systems, energy, and building electrical technologies by organising activities such as technical visits, seminars, symposium and conference etc.

OUR MISSION

  • To provide services and a communication platform for the professionals of  the IET members engaged in the engineering and technology in the fields of power and energy to exchange and share their knowledge and experience.
  • To promote the professionalism image of the IET and the IET Hong Kong.
  • To exercise our professional knowledge to serve the community.
  • To enhance membership recruitment and interests of young people in the IET.
  • To build up lasting professional relationship with local institutions and institutions in Mainland China and overseas

STRUCTURE

The membership of the PES is from all IET members in Hong Kong who have interests in various areas related to engineering and technology in the fields of power and energy. It is estimated that there are over 1,000 members related to PES.

The PES is managed by a Section Committee consisting of a group of professionals from different sectors yet with common professional interests who are dedicated to communicate with and serve its members in the fields of power and energy engineering or technology.

There are currently three Professional Groups formed within the PES to concentrate on activities related to their respective areas of specialties as shown below. Each Professional Group is managed by its own Sub-Committee.

FIG 1 : STRUCTURE OF THE PES

ACTIVITIES

The PES organizes various international conferences, symposiums, seminars and technical visits for its members to gain first hand information of the latest development in the power engineering, energy technology development and building electrical technologies.

We have been maintaining links with other professional organizations including Macau Institution of Engineers through joint events, e.g. joint seminars.

Special events for members, focusing on specific subjects, are also organized to promote expertise and awareness in the subject that is of interest to the power and energy engineering/technology community in Hong Kong.

The PES also maintains a close relationship and affiliation with the Technical and Professional Networks (TPN) of the IET in order to enhance both networking and quality standards of activities and services to members. There are four TPNs which PES is linked with:

  • Building Electrical Technology
  • Power Trading and Control
  • Power Systems and Equipment
  • Power Conversion and Application

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

The flagship event of the PES is the Conference on Advances in Power System Control, Operation and Management (APSCOM), which is a triannual Conference starting from 1991 and has become an internationally well known event to the professionals worldwide. The coming one is the 8th conference to be held on 8th November to 11 November 2009.

In October 2004, the PES hosted for the Building Electrical Technology Network (BETNET) the first International Conference on Building Electrical Technology - BETNET 2004 in Hong Kong, which was the first international conference organized for PN in IEE at that time and were supported by PN management of the IEE and well received by members and professionals in the related fields.

SYMPOSIUMS AND SEMINARS

The Power Symposium of The PES, which focuses on the technical aspects related to the respective areas of the three Professional Groups, is now an annual event chaired by the chairmen of the three Professional Groups in rotation. In 2009, the eighth Power Symposium was held on 19 June with a theme "Hong Kong in the Next Decade - Infrastructural and Technological Developments", which was very successful with over 150 participants.

The PES has been providing a platform to speakers from industry and academic institutions to give presentations on power engineering, industrial drives, energy management, engineering quality, building services and many other technical topics.

TECHNICAL VISITS

The Section also organizes technical visits to engineering sites such as power plants, substations, control centers and various building electrical systems. These visits also cover sites outside Hong Kong. In 2009, we organized cross border visits to the Venetian Macao Hotel and Guangzhou Science Centre. Taking advantage of the opportunity of the visits, we also held meetings with various learned societies in Guangzhou for knowledge and experience sharing as well as relationship building.

 APPEAL TO PARTICIPATION

While the PES Executive Committee strikes hard to organize activities for the IET members in power and energy engineering related areas, it appeals to members for active support in participation in all activities including contribution to committee works.

When there are vacancies of the Ordinary Member in The PES for the next session, invitation of submitting Nomination Form will be posted on the newsletter of The Institution of Engineering and Technology Hong Kong and the website of The PES. All IET members in Hong Kong in the power and energy field are most welcome to join in the Executive Committee to contribute their efforts and expertise to advance the operation of The PES and to serve the IET members.

For any enquiry of The PES, please send your message to the administrator of The Institution of Engineering and Technology Miss Elsa Wong at admin@theiet.org.hk
