Message from the Chairman, Power and Energy Section
The Institution of Engineering and Technology Hong Kong
Welcome to the Power and Energy Section (PES).
It is my great honor to serve as Chairman for PES in the current session. Ever since its inception, PES is devoted to making contribution to the development of the IET and the profession as a whole in the areas of power engineering, building services as well as energy conversion and delivery. Strategically, the structure of PES has been readily aligned with this mindset of dedication through the three professional groups under the PES umbrella, namely Energy, Power Systems and Building Services. Throughout the years, this structure proves to be effective in meeting the diverse needs of our members and the trade industry.
In the new session 2011/2012, we would continue to gear up our momentum to serve our fellow members and the trade industry at large. First of all, we are honored to organize our flagship event, the 11th Annual Power Symposium, on 15thJune 2012. The main theme of the coming symposium will be focused on Building Services engineering.
We expect to keep our members abreast of the latest development in the industry via. technical visits and seminars. A core team has been set up to organize various technical visits, and another core team is to organize seminars this year. We would also remain actively involved in public consultations and participation in various Working Groups led by Government Departments.
I trust that with the strong commitment and devoted efforts of the section committee, we will continue to bring quality services to our members. Our success will hinge on your engagement, active participation and support in our coming activities.
C.N. Leung
Chairman
Power and Energy Section
Session 2011/2012
INTRODUCTION
The Power and Energy Section (PES) aims to provide opportunities for members to share experience and exchange views in the fields of power systems, energy, and building electrical technologies by organising activities such as technical visits, seminars, symposium and conference etc.
OUR MISSION
STRUCTURE
The membership of the PES is from all IET members in Hong Kong who have interests in various areas related to engineering and technology in the fields of power and energy. It is estimated that there are over 1,000 members related to PES.
The PES is managed by a Section Committee consisting of a group of professionals from different sectors yet with common professional interests who are dedicated to communicate with and serve its members in the fields of power and energy engineering or technology.
There are currently three Professional Groups formed within the PES to concentrate on activities related to their respective areas of specialties as shown below. Each Professional Group is managed by its own Sub-Committee.

FIG 1 : STRUCTURE OF THE PES
ACTIVITIES
The PES organizes various international conferences, symposiums, seminars and technical visits for its members to gain first hand information of the latest development in the power engineering, energy technology development and building electrical technologies.
We have been maintaining links with other professional organizations including Macau Institution of Engineers through joint events, e.g. joint seminars.
Special events for members, focusing on specific subjects, are also organized to promote expertise and awareness in the subject that is of interest to the power and energy engineering/technology community in Hong Kong.
The PES also maintains a close relationship and affiliation with the Technical and Professional Networks (TPN) of the IET in order to enhance both networking and quality standards of activities and services to members. There are four TPNs which PES is linked with:
-
Building Electrical Technology
-
Power Trading and Control
-
Power Systems and Equipment
-
Power Conversion and Application
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
The flagship event of the PES is the Conference on Advances in Power System Control, Operation and Management (APSCOM), which is a triannual Conference starting from 1991 and has become an internationally well known event to the professionals worldwide. The coming one is the 9th conference to be held on 11th November to 14th November 2012.
In October 2004, the PES hosted for the Building Electrical Technology Network (BETNET) the first International Conference on Building Electrical Technology - BETNET 2004 in Hong Kong, which was the first international conference organized for PN in IET at that time and were supported by PN management of the IET and well received by members and professionals in the related fields.
SYMPOSIUMS AND SEMINARS
The Power Symposium of The PES, which focuses on the technical aspects related to the respective areas of the three Professional Groups, is now an annual event chaired by the chairmen of the three Professional Groups in rotation. In 2011, the 10th Power Symposium was held on 17 June with a theme "Smart Grid: Challenges and Opportunities", which was well received with over 200 participants.
The PES has been providing a platform to speakers from industry and academic institutions to give presentations on power engineering, industrial drives, energy management, engineering quality, building services and many other technical topics.
TECHNICAL VISITS
The Section also organizes technical visits to engineering sites such as power plants, substations, control centers and various building electrical systems. These visits also cover sites outside Hong Kong. In 2011, we organized cross border visits to the Nuclear Power Station in ShenZhen.
APPEAL TO PARTICIPATION
While the PES Executive Committee strikes hard to organize activities for the IET members in power and energy engineering related areas, it appeals to members for active support in participation in all activities including contribution to committee works.
When there are vacancies of the Ordinary Member in The PES for the next session, invitation of submitting Nomination Form will be posted on the newsletter of The Institution of Engineering and Technology Hong Kong and the website of The PES. All IET members in Hong Kong in the power and energy field are most welcome to join the Committee to contribute their efforts to serve the IET members, and offer their expertise to advance the operation of The PES.
For any enquiry of The PES, please send your message to the administrator of The Institution of Engineering and Technology Ms. Julian Chung at admin@theiet.org.hk
